A showpiece office building

The Berlin branch of PORR acted as general contractor for the construction of two 7-storey office buildings and an underground car park on the TechnoCampus Berlin site. The scope of the contract also included the realisation of a 3-storey car park with an open parking deck and an airy openwork façade made of expanded metal.

Work meets life at the Berlin TechnoCampus

The TechnoCampus is situated at Spandauer Siemensdamm 59-63 between Berlin’s western city centre, the district of Siemensstadt, and the Urban Tech Republic science and technology park at what used to be Tegel Airport. It encompasses the site of the Wernerwerk XV designed by Siemens in-house architect Hans Hertlein. Following extensive revitalisation, the listed building now represents the heart of the TechnoCampus. The campus area has been extended to around 60,000m2 by the addition of two new buildings with a gross floor area of 16,625m2 and 6,918m2, both designed by the Tchoban Voss office. The site combines work and life, with modern, spacious offices, a flexible room layout, and inner courtyards with lawns and terraces that provide inviting spaces for relaxing breaks and outdoor meetings.

New builds pay tribute to the existing architecture

With their pared-down design, the grey, clearly structured clinker brick façade, and storey heights of up to 4.25m, the new buildings pay tribute to Hertlein’s pioneering style.

The first new 7-storey building F also features a three-storey angled extension. The other new building E is shaped like an L and, along with two of the existing buildings, encloses a large campus courtyard under which the one-storey underground car park with 177 parking spaces has been built. A 60cm layer of soil was laid to allow for a lush selection of vegetation to be planted.

Combined expertise from a single Group

The final handover of the building took place in June 2022 to the complete satisfaction of the client. In addition to the PORR Building Construction department, PORRs specialist civil engineering and sustainable building planning experts were also involved in the Siemensdamm project. To meet the stringent requirements for the protection of the existing listed buildings, our colleagues from Spezialtiefbau installed 997 low-vibration Atlas piles for the deep foundations. As the soil was contaminated in places, the piles were installed without extracting borehole cuttings from the soil. PORR Spezialtiefbau Planung was responsible for the structural analysis and pile design, and pde Integrale Planung conducted the audit for DGNB Platinum certification.
