Pegs, safety nets, micropiles and anchors.

The flooding of the Elbe in 2013 destabilised a portion of the slope at the confluence of the Elbe and Ohre Rivers in Rogätz, on the border of Saxony-Anhalt. Owing to the presence of development on the edge of the slope, it was essential to strengthen the slope and refurbish the flood protection. These measures included anchoring with safety nets and the new construction of a back-anchored retaining wall.

Challenging execution

Ground spikes were inserted up to 8m into the non-load-bearing and softer surface soil of the slope. The installation of the approx. 8,400 running metres of spikes was technically necessary due to differences in height of up to 13m and a slope angle of approx. 45°. A long reach excavator with a maximum extension of 27m was used to manufacture the nails and apply approx. 4,500m² of safety netting to the slope.

The new retaining wall was based on a foundation of approx. 60 micropiles and back-anchored with approx. 140 anchor piles. The process involved the manufacture of almost 3,000 running metres of micro-injected piles.
