Interview with Germany's best trainee

Ryan Hamilton emigrated from Australia to Germany four years ago for love. Here he started an apprenticeship as a special civil engineering technician at Stump-Franki and completed it with extraordinary success: He was awarded the prize for best apprentice in Germany by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Today, Ryan works as a special civil engineering contractor at his training company in the Hanover branch. And that's not all: alongside his work, he is studying to become a construction technician. Find out how he came to Stump-Franki from Australia and what he enjoys most about his work in our interview.

Why did you decide to do the training? What interests you about it?

I used to work in construction in Australia, but not with the machines and equipment that are available here in special civil engineering. This perspective appealed to me, so I tried it out. And that was a good decision. What interested me most were the complex projects and the different processes and technologies we use in light and heavy foundation engineering.

How did you find out about Stump-Franki back then when you were looking for an apprenticeship and why did you choose our company?

I looked at various companies in the Hanover/Hildesheim area for special civil engineering. After a nice conversation with the training team at Stump-Franki, I decided to do the training. I felt comfortable here right from the start.

After 3 years of training: What makes it special to work at Stump-Franki?

The opportunity to further my education and to work on different construction sites with very different challenges is what makes it special for me. I also have a great team around me. Especially during my initial phase in Germany, they were always ready to help me and stood by my side - even with the paperwork, which was very challenging from a language perspective.

What stages did you go through during your training? Which activities/tasks did you enjoy the most?

The training in special civil engineering takes place in constant rotation between the construction site and the vocational school. During the training, you work on a construction site for about 4-6 weeks, then you go to vocational school for 2 weeks. In this way, you get to know several construction sites with the different procedures. This shows you the broad spectrum of special civil engineering. For example, I was on construction sites where driven piles and Atlas piles were produced, but also on construction sites for tiebacks and micropiles. What I enjoyed the most was driving an excavator. Here I already had some experience from my time in Australia.

What would you tell students who are interested in an apprenticeship?

It is definitely worth doing an apprenticeship at Stump-Franki - even if you want to study afterwards. You gain a lot of practical experience that will help you when you go on to study. And if you don't want to study, after three years you have an exciting, varied job and many development opportunities. Stump-Franki attaches great importance to the development of its employees, and that's fun.

Where do you prefer to be: in the office or on the construction site?

I would say a good mix of office and construction site is what makes the job. In the end, it's not so important where you are, but what kind of team you're surrounded by. And that simply fits at Stump-Franki.

You were awarded the title of Germany's best trainee. What does this award mean to you?

At the beginning of the apprenticeship, as a foreign speaker, I was naturally worried whether I would pass the apprenticeship in German. Now I am just proud that I passed as the best German trainee. I also have the support of my good trainers to thank for that.

Thank you very much!
