Ecological and economical road rehabilitation in Bersenbrück

On behalf of the district of Osnabrück, the Osnabrück branch rehabilitated the Bokeler Straße (district road 142) in Bersenbrück. The focus here was on a sustainable and economical method: Approximately 2 km of open-pored bank concrete was produced - a building material technology that scores points from an ecological and economic perspective. In addition to the production of the concrete, the contract also comprised the removal and disposal of the existing ballast.  In addition, a 16 cm thick base course of crushed stone was produced under the concrete. This was followed by the filling and preparation of the necessary working spaces.

Technical challenges and new technology

For the county road 142, the use of concrete was realised for the first time. Compared to other regulated roadbed designs, such as ballast, consolidation or grass pavers, concrete is an ecological and economical alternative in road construction.

The economic benefit: In comparison to other methods in road construction, banquet concrete simultaneously has a reliable infiltration capacity due to the high void contents with a high load-bearing capacity, which is also suitable for temporary heavy traffic loads. Sealing of the verges can be ruled out due to the high water permeability. This increases the service life of the road. In addition, the technology is associated with low maintenance and upkeep requirements,

as the design is jointless. Together with the effective protection of the road edges against edge chipping, it thus saves on repair and maintenance costs. The ecological benefits: the open-pored concrete binds fine dust and pollutants from the road traffic and thus serves as a filter for pollutants. The process thus has a sustainable positive effect on the environment and improves the CO2 balance. It also conserves resources, as the building material is recyclable.

The installation thickness and building material properties allow for adapt individually to the traffic load and the conditions on site. Because of the work, which the client had planned to carry out in November/December, was made more difficult by the weather. It was also necessary to modify the mould of the slipform paver and to change the scanning technology. Despite the challenges, the task was completed safely and successfully thanks to a high level of expertise.

Building materials expertise and safe execution from a single source

Thanks to the intensive collaboration with the in-house building materials laboratory, which also took over the on-site supervision, the executing construction site team handed over the project with high quality and free of defects to the satisfied client.
