U5 Europaviertel: Dismantling of the tunnel tubes at Güterplatz

Our colleagues are working at full speed on the U5 light rail extension project to the Europaviertel district in Frankfurt am Main: excavation work in one of Frankfurt's deepest construction pits for the underground Güterplatz station will soon enter its final phase. Construction of the station building will then begin.

The special feature: before construction of the station can begin, the tunnel tubes in the area of the future station must first be dismantled as part of the excavation work.

Why is dismantling necessary?

For the construction of the 1,160 m long underground section, a tunnel structure was built using a closed construction method with two tunnel tubes using shield tunnelling. They run from Europa-Allee to Platz der Republik near Frankfurt am Main Central Station. As the tunnel tubes had to be constructed in front of the Güterplatz station structure, the tunnel tubes have to be demolished in the course of excavating the construction pit in the area of the future underground station. At the level of the tunnel roof, the upper third of the tunnel tubes has already been demolished in order to create the third stiffening layer to secure the excavation pit.

The dismantling in the excavation pit and the removal of the demolition material for recycling purposes represent a logistical challenge that the team is mastering with great skill.
