Environmentally friendly concepts in road construction: Using warm mix asphalt for road renovation in Münster

Oevermann Verkehrswegebau GmbH, a subsidiary of PORR Germany, is demonstrating in a current construction project that sustainable asphalting is possible in road construction. As part of the "Osthofstrasse" construction project in Münster (Westphalia, Germany) the various tasks performed by the Münster/Dortmund branch of Oevermann Verkehrswegebau GmbH included renovation of the roadway structure over a total area of 24,000m² for the city of Münster.

The project has a focus on environmental sustainability. Two innovative asphalt concepts are being used for the asphalting of the two upper layers: warm mix asphalt, and warm mix asphalt with bitumen rejuvenating additives. Twelve different asphalts are processed in measuring fields using the two methods.

Real environmental protection in road construction

The city of Münster is well known as a bicycle-friendly city, but it is also extremely innovative when it comes to the technical execution of construction projects, especially in environmental protection. A joint concept from Oevermann Verkehrswegebau GmbH and the City of Münster for the implementation of a sustainable approach to asphalt work in Osthofstrasse has been adopted. The concept: The vapours and aerosols generated during the production and processing of asphalt are significantly reduced. The innovative asphalt concepts of "warm mix asphalt" and "warm mix asphalt with bitumen rejuvenating additives" represent a reliable path to safe and environmentally friendly road construction.

What makes warm mix asphalt sustainable?

Special characteristics: Not only are the temperatures of the warm mix asphalt used during production and processing below those of conventional hot mix asphalt, but in some cases they are also below the temperatures of tried and tested low-temperature asphalts. The advantages of this are more than just environmental. Odour pollution is also significantly reduced for workers and those living near asphalt plants and construction sites.

Intensive ongoing monitoring by the Oevermann construction materials laboratory

Preliminary assessments of the bitumen by a nationally recognised bitumen specialist and of the asphalt at the Oevermann construction materials laboratory, as well as constant temperature measurements and radiometric density measurements by the Oevermann construction materials laboratory on the construction site ensured success when creating the testing fields. Two hundred and forty samples of asphalt were taken for testing during installation. In addition, around one hundred drill cores will shortly be taken from the two layers for measurements. The results of the scientific assessments are eagerly awaited by Oevermann Verkehrswegebau GmbH and the City of Münster.
