Asphalt surfaces of taxiways must be renewed regularly
To make it easier for pilots to find their way around commercial airports, the connecting routes between runways and terminals are named according to the international letter alphabet. At Frankfurt Airport, as at almost all large airports, there is therefore a taxiway M for Mike. In a section between the intersecting taxiways M8 and M10, the highly stressed and damaged surface of Mike now needs to be rehabilitated. In the first step, the heavily paved surface will be milled to a depth of 3 to 12 cm over a total area of 42,800 m². This will be followed by the installation of 20,700 m² of stress-relieving SAMI layer (Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer), 1,500 m² of asphalt base course AC 32 TS, 15,840 m² of asphalt binder AC 22 BS and 26,300 m² of asphalt concrete surface course ADS AC 11 D SP.
In the 2nd construction phase, the rehabilitation of the two taxiways L5 and M8 will be realised in hybrid construction "concrete on asphalt". For this purpose, the defective pavement will be milled off to a depth of between 4 and 32 cm over an area of 24,760 m². The new asphalt construction will consist of 15,000 m² SAMI layer, 9,700 m² asphalt binder AC 22 BS, 18,500 m² asphalt concrete surface course ADS AC 11 D SP and 2,800 m² concrete pavement C35/45. In addition, 250 m of cable conduits have to be laid and new sign foundations erected.
Highest demands on operational planning and construction logistics
Since all work may only be carried out in night shifts outside of flight operations, adherence to schedules and close coordination with third-party trades are of the utmost importance. The mandatory closing time is from 10.30 pm to 6.30 am. In addition, the work takes place in the airport's security zone. Therefore, nothing can be left to chance when planning the deployment and construction logistics for the use of equipment, the transport of materials and the removal of the demolition, so as not to jeopardise the final deadline.
