Sustainable road construction: recycling and schedule reliability at the Dortmund-Unna motorway junction

PORR Verkehrswegebau Münster/Dortmund has been commissioned by Autobahn GmbH to carry out comprehensive road construction work aimed at renewing and expanding the motorway's foundations. This serves to restore the capacity of the Dortmund/Unna and Unna-Ost motorway junctions. The work is in line with PORR's "Green and Lean" sustainability strategy, with all demolition materials being processed on site for recycling.

The team from Münster is focussing on closing the gap in the A1 in the area of the "Büddenberg", "Hansastraße" and "Königsborner Straße" bridge structures. The tasks include widening the carriageway, dismantling and replacing the drainage system, including the installation and connection of a new DN 400 collector pipe, as well as the complete dismantling and reconstruction of the carriageway in the direction of Cologne. In addition, the hard shoulder will be partially upgraded.

The dismantling of the bituminous asphalt pavement as well as the drainage systems has been successfully completed. The demolition of the existing road pavement (concrete carriageway and layers without binder) has also been completed. The new construction of the unbound superstructure is in progress.

Processing the demolition material is economical and sustainable

"Meeting deadlines is the top priority for such an important traffic junction. The tight schedule and the narrow construction site are very demanding for our teams," explains project manager Timo Wenning and continues: "They are currently working in parallel on the demolition of the existing carriageway, the construction of the new unbound superstructure as well as the construction of the new sewers. We also have to coordinate with other trades that are constructing noise barriers and bridge structures at the same time."

The material from the demolition of the old concrete carriageway as well as the old troughs and channels is processed directly on the construction site. This is not only economical, but also sustainable in two respects, as the recycling saves many lorry transports. The technically demanding goal of achieving an aggregate of category UF3 for the frost protection layer has already been confirmed by external monitoring.
