Career built by PORR: The balance between practice and theory

An interview with a former dual student.

The balance between practical experience and theory was important to Justus Lehmann (24) right from the start. That's why he opted for a dual study programme at PORR. He has now been a site manager at PORR Hochbau Region Ost in Berlin since October 2022. In our interview, he tells us how PORR shaped his career path and why he most enjoyed being on the construction site during his studies.

Justus Lehmann has been a part of PORR for several years.

How did you find out about PORR when you were looking for an apprenticeship and why did you decide on the dual study programme for civil engineers?

I knew PORR through my father, who worked here. My professional journey started in 2016 and was shaped by PORR. After my A-levels, I completed an internship at PORR and got to know and love the company and the fields of activity here during this time. This internship also set the course for my future career. I then trained as a plant mechanic for sanitary, heating and air conditioning technology. When I successfully completed this training, I applied for the dual study programme to become a civil engineer at PORR. I felt I was in good hands right from the start. I decided on the dual study programme because of the good balance between construction site and university. and this ensured me practical experience already during my studies.

After 3 years of studying: What makes working at PORR special?

There are a few things that make working at PORR special. Among other things, I think the opportunity for further training in the form of many training courses is great. You also get to work on interesting, varied and sustainable construction projects. It always remains exciting and challenging. Not to forget, of course, the events within the company with colleagues. This is where good team cohesion is lived.

Where did you prefer to be: in the vocational school or in the office / on the construction site?

I enjoyed the work in the calculation department, but I liked being on the construction site best. Here you have a varied daily routine and apply what you have learned directly. This strengthens your understanding of construction processes, technical issues and dealing with subcontractors and clients. Here I also learned to jump over my own shadow and tackle problems. You also develop a sense of responsibility.

What would you tell pupils who are interested in the dual study programme?

The balance between theory and practice is a good thing. Other advantages are also the regulated remuneration, the support from the employer and the good chances of being taken on by PORR.

Thank you very much.
