Horb high bridge: Bridge piers grow into the air

Since the foundation stone was laid for the Neckartal bridge in Horb in April, work has been in full swing. PORR Ingenieurbau and Stump-Franki Spezialtiefbau are working hand in hand with passion and shoulder to shoulder. The special civil engineering work south of the Neckar is almost complete. The southern abutment of axis 70 has been concreted. In trusting cooperation with the client, the Karlsruhe Regional Council, and the planner, the construction site team is shaping the progress of construction: the first bridge piers are growing in height.

The pier formwork for axis 60 is climbing towards the sky as planned every week. It already rises more than ten metres out of the ground and should eventually reach a height of around 30 metres. In addition, the erection of the ground-supported falsework has begun. Holes almost 30 metres deep were drilled for the auxiliary piers, which will then be reinforced and filled with concrete. Eight bored piles are used per foundation, which will later support the 667 m long bridge over the Neckar valley. In the next few weeks, the bored pile work in the first construction phase is to be completed and construction work on the first pylon pier will begin.

Since the subsoil consists of fill, weathered rock and marl, and the piles will eventually be embedded in the rock, the "big equipment" is called for: the two rotary drilling rigs BG 45 and LB 36 will be used for the special civil engineering work. They are among the largest and most powerful drilling rigs in Germany. Due to the slope, moving the rigs is a great challenge. The same applies to the delivery of reinforcement cages and ready-mix concrete via the construction roads, which are arranged like serpentines. The team masters these demanding logistical tasks with experience.

Construction site as BIM pilot project

The construction site was initiated by the client as a BIM pilot project. Tailor-made solutions are developed in close cooperation between the client, PORR and the planner.  The use of BIM enables all project participants to work together on an integrated data model and ensures smooth project coordination.
