Potsdam's Nuthestrasse, which was upgraded to an motorway in the 1970s, runs for 6.3 kilometres in a south-easterly direction to the A115 motorway and is part of Brandenburg's L40 state road. With up to 70,000 vehicles per day, it is one of the most important and busiest traffic arteries in Potsdam and Brandenburg. For this reason, completing construction work on time is always a top priority. In this project, the Berlin traffic route construction team went the extra mile: Following the resurfacing of the carriageway in both directions between the Wetzlarer Straße and Friedrich List Straße junctions, the construction site was handed over three weeks earlier than planned in October 2023.

Technical challenge mastered
On behalf of the Brandenburg State Road Authority, construction work began in August 2023 with the milling off of a total of 25,000 tonnes of asphalt pavement. The new asphalt surfacing layers were then produced on approx. 35,000 m², consisting of asphalt base, binder and surface courses, to a total thickness of 30 cm. A low-noise, 2.5 cm thick SMA 8 LA asphalt surface course was laid to reduce noise pollution for local residents.
Compared to conventional asphalt surface courses, stone mastic asphalt SMA LA has a special grain composition with a higher void content. The more open surface structure achieves a considerable reduction in noise. Maintaining the higher void content while at the same time maintaining the degree of compaction is technically very demanding. Inspection tests carried out by the client have confirmed the flawless quality of the workmanship.

Strong teamwork
The contractually agreed completion date was 27 October 2023. Thanks to a strong team effort in planning and implementation, excellent work preparation and smooth cooperation with the client, the goal of handing over the construction site in the second week of October was achieved. Some of the asphalt work was carried out in a staggered construction method by the asphalt crews from Berlin and the team from Osnabrück.
