A66 Salzbachtal bridge: Countdown to opening the south bridge to traffic

The Salzbachtal bridge in Wiesbaden, a 304 m long, four-lane motorway bridge on the A66, had to be demolished and rebuilt within a tight time frame due to the disproportionate increase in heavy traffic and age-related damage. PORR is realising this challenging infrastructure project on the main traffic artery between Mainz and Wiesbaden with competence, reliability and passion: from the damage to the demolition to the new construction.

Due to the damage to the south bridge in June 2021, the demolition of both sections of the Salzbachtal Bridge was carried out simultaneously by means of blasting. Together, PORR structural engineering and Reisch Sprengtechnik mastered all the technical and organisational challenges of this special situation with flying colours in trusting coordination with Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, the federal motorway authority. Clean-up work began just one hour after the Salzbachtal bridge was blown up. ARGE PORR / Plauen Stahl Technologie GmbH was commissioned with the replacement construction of the Salzbachtal bridge. The foundation work was carried out by the PORR subsidiary Stump-Franki Spezialtiefbau.

An important milestone is now imminent: the opening of the south bridge to traffic on 18 December 2023 - a decisive step for traffic in and around Wiesbaden. But also for the entire project team, who are working towards this moment exactly on schedule. The countdown is on.
