Space is to be created for a replacement new building on the campus of the Ruhr University in Bochum. In the course of this, Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW commissioned PORR Becker Abbruchtechnik with an exciting project: the pollutant clean-up and subsequent dismantling of the GC complex of the Ruhr University.

The starting signal was given in July 2023. In total, the GC complex covers a floor area of 43,000 m² and 198,000 m³ of enclosed space. The building consists of 12 floors, 4 low-rise buildings and an auditorium building with 5 lecture halls. On the 116 m long, 23 m wide and 54 m high high-rise building, 364 curtain balconies will be dismantled in one piece and then pollutants will be removed on the ground. In addition, 13,500 m³ of façade elements will be removed, separated and disposed of. 1,900 t of steel scrap will be returned to the recycling cycle in a resource-saving manner.

Before the extensive work could begin, a work of art by the artist Josef Albers had to be restored, recorded and dismantled. After the construction of the replacement building, the artwork will be professionally reattached. In this way, old and valuable things can be preserved.
