New milestone in the U5 Europaviertel project: Construction of the excavation pit at Boulevard Ost safely completed

After several months of precise work in close cooperation, the U5 Europaviertel consortium, consisting of PORR's civil engineering and tunnelling divisions and subsidiary Stump-Franki Spezialtiefbau, has reached another milestone in the "U5 Europaviertel Frankfurt a. M. light rail line extension" project: excavation work for the construction pit on Boulevard East has been safely completed.

In the last few weeks, the team of ARGE U5 Europaviertel has been working at full speed on the so-called gap closure at Boulevard Ost: the connection of the excavation pit constructed in 2019, which served as the starting shaft for the tunnel boring machine (TBM) EVA, with the already constructed tunnel section in open cut construction. The excavation pit required for this was constructed with a continuous incline so that the height difference of around 14 m between the lower-lying tunnel tubes could be compensated for via the tunnel portal to the above-ground course.

For the final connection with the launch pit, the transverse bulkhead was cut and then removed by machine. Thanks to the many years of expertise of our specialists, another important step in the U5 Europaviertel project was thus achieved safely and economically.

Since the beginning of February 2023, the civil engineering work in the area of the "gap closure" between the now connected excavation pits has been in full swing towards the starting shaft, where the construction of the structure bases will also begin soon.

We congratulate the team on this great achievement and wish them continued success with the pioneering U5 Europaviertel project.
