On the occasion of the opening of the Citytunnel, representatives of the builders, politicians and the most important contractors came together on 31 March 2023. Guests of honour were Lord Mayor Ms Simone Borris, former Lord Mayor Dr Lutz Trümper, Minister for Infrastructure and Digital Affairs of Saxony-Anhalt Dr Lydia Hüskens and Dr Marcus Schenkel from Deutsche Bahn. PORR was represented by almost the entire project and construction site team.
The Civil Engineering, Berlin site, was responsible for the construction of the tunnel, which ran under the project name "Ernst-Reuter-Allee railway overpass". The team completed the tubes of the new Citytunnel by June 2022. Thanks to the work in solidarity, all major challenges were mastered with flying colours. In various speeches, the importance of the completed tunnel for Magdeburg was emphasised and all those involved in the construction were thanked. Afterwards, accompanied by a band of musicians, the guests went into the new tunnel. Here, a choir with instrumental accompaniment performed several songs and proved that the impressive structure not only represents a considerable added value for Magdeburg's infrastructure, but also offers an acoustic highlight for musical sounds.
After the official part of the opening, the tunnel was opened to the general public for viewing: Several thousand people turned up to marvel at the Citytunnel on foot. Since 1 April, traffic has been rolling through the tunnel and now also connects the east and west of the city centre for cars on a short, safe route.
