FUBIC innovation campus: PORR develops pioneering site in Berlin-Dahlem

The FUBIC innovation campus is being built in Berlin-Dahlem in the direct neighbourhood of Freie Universität Berlin (FUB). PORR Verkehrswegebau Berlin was awarded the contract for the development of the 50,000 square metre site by the site developer and future operator, the state-owned WISTA Management GmbH, in a joint venture with Emil Tepe GmbH. As the first tenants are due to move into the Innovation Campus in 2025, adherence to deadlines is paramount.

Within the consortium, PORR Verkehrswegebau is responsible for the road and path construction, the construction of the telecommunications system as well as the gardening and landscaping work. Tepe is responsible for laying the wastewater and drinking water pipes as well as installing the outdoor lighting systems. The future innovation centre will be powered exclusively by green electricity from the FUBIC electricity-only plant. The buildings will be supplied via WISTA's own medium-voltage ring with a connected load of 10 MVA. Responsibility for the construction of the medium-voltage system lies jointly with the consortium partners.

Open communication and transparent working methods guarantee completion date

The conversion and expansion of a former US military hospital into the FUBIC innovation centre in the heart of the campus area has been in full swing since spring 2023. Up to six new office and laboratory buildings are gradually being built around it. "The biggest challenge is to ensure a smooth process between building construction, civil engineering and road construction and to find quick and uncomplicated solutions in the event of any scheduling conflicts," explains senior site manager Michael Werk. Nature conservation is not neglected in this project either. The existing trees will be largely preserved in order to create valuable green and open spaces on the Innovation Park site. In particular, a 100-year-old oak tree and a bat cellar on the construction site will need to be protected during the runtime.

Infrastructure for an important innovation centre in Berlin

The Dahlem district in the south-west of Berlin is one of the most important science centres in Germany. In addition to the Free University of Berlin (FU-Berlin) with 35,000 students today, numerous research institutes have settled in the "German Oxford" over the past 100 years. The FU Berlin is at the forefront of the number of university spin-offs in Germany. Up to 80 scientific start-ups will find an inspiring place to work with numerous opportunities for networking and collaboration in the new innovation and start-up centre FUBIC (Business and Innovation Center next to Freie Universität Berlin Campus).
