Challenging asphalt work on the "A7 Tunnel Altona" project

The A 7 motorway in the Hamburg area is being widened from 6 to 8 lanes between the Otmarschen and Volkspark junctions. As part of this project, the carriageway is being completely renewed and a noise protection tunnel is being built, which will later connect the districts of Bahrenfeld and Altona. The Altona tunnel is one of the largest infrastructure projects in northern Germany and is being realised by the A7 Tunnel Altona consortium. G-S Straßenbau GmbH, a subsidiary company of PORR, was awarded the contract to carry out all asphalt work for the construction of the Altona tunnel by the consortium back in May 2021.

The construction site consists of three sections: open stretch, tunnel and switch area. The open section is divided into three construction phases, whereby the final state for the 8-lane extension of the A7 motorway is already being produced. Around 900 metres of asphalt will be laid, of which around 200 metres will be mastic asphalt as the surface course and 700 metres will be a temporary surface course with stone mastic asphalt. The open-pored asphalt is not scheduled to be laid until 2028. The new noise protection tunnel extends over a length of 2.3 kilometres, while the switch area covers around 200 metres. The asphalt for the final state of the tunnel will be applied in several construction phases in each direction of travel.

Extensive construction work on the busy BAB 7 motorway
In order to minimise disruption to traffic, three lanes in each direction will be maintained at all times during the entire construction phase. This represents one of the challenges for the realisation of the project. Construction of the new tunnel cells on the three existing bridge structures (Behringstraße, Ostdorfer Weg and Bahrenfelder Chaussee) therefore began in advance. In addition, the A7 motorway is being provisionally widened both inside and outside in order to keep traffic flowing.

The construction site is currently in the final construction phase of the open section. In October 2023, asphalt work will begin on an area of around 10,000 m². The preparatory work for the tunnel is progressing well. Further asphalt column operations are planned until November 2023.

Heavy use of materials over a large area
The construction project comprises a total of 140,000 m² of rolled and mastic asphalt for the final extension, 10,000 m² of Rolled asphalt in the lower-order road network as well as 75,000 m² of Rolled asphalt for temporary measures in the run-up to the tunnel and road construction. In addition, 15,000 m² of Rolled asphalt will be used for construction site facilities and storage areas during the runtime.

G-S road construction overcomes previous challenges on schedule
Despite the tight schedule, the G-S Straßenbau GmbH team has so far been able to complete all the work on time. Quality, reliability, high flexibility and adherence to deadlines are always at the forefront in order to fulfil all customer requirements.
