Selective partial dismantling of Stellinger Moor waste incineration plant.

The Stellinger Moor waste incineration plant in Hamburg was in operation from 1973 to 2015 and was used for the thermal recycling of municipal waste. The section scheduled for dismantling has been emission-free since the plant was decommissioned in October 2015.

PORR Umwelttechnik was responsible for providing the site facilities, securing the site, decontamination, gutting and dismantling the building, recycling individual components, and processing the materials. The works were all carried out during ongoing operations. Particular attention was paid to employee protection and logistics.

The construction scheme involved treating a total of 20 structures and around 100,000m3 that were decontaminated, gutted and demolished by specialist personnel. 14 buildings were completely demolished. Using a special demolition excavator, PORR Umwelttechnik dismantled a 72m high chimney and excavated three underground structures.

The boiler house, turbine hall and heavy machinery building were also decontaminated, gutted and partially dismantled. The 36m-high boiler house contained two large boilers, each one 30m high.

The site remediation works comprised asbestos remediation and the treatment of artificial mineral fibres, caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, corrosive residues, hazardous dusts and many other substances. Special black areas were created for the decontamination measures and accordingly sealed off.

Creating value by preserving value.

Most of the approximately 20,000 tonnes of mineral construction waste that remained after the buildings had been demolished were processed on-site by a crushing plant. Part of the reclaimed material was reused in the construction site for technical filling operations. PORR Umwelttechnik removed the excess material professionally and recycled it.
