Residential, office and retail complex on the River Ruhr
Three buildings, one shared quarter
The three building sections are connected via a shared inner courtyard and a contiguous underground car park. Each building comprises a ground floor, three or four upper floors as well as a penthouse level. This structure spatially links the various uses within the quarter.
100 flats with varied floor plans
A total of 100 residential units were created, including 52 owner-occupied flats and 48 rental flats. The living areas range from 47 m² to 242 m² and offer a corresponding variety of flat sizes and floor plans. The flats are predominantly oriented towards the river.
Spaces for offices, medical practices, retail and catering
The ground floors of the three buildings house commercial spaces for catering and retail. In the building on Bahnstraße, there are also office and medical practice spaces on the upper floors and on the stepped storey. With sizes ranging from around 40 m² to 740 m², the commercial units allow for a variety of uses.
A landscaped inner courtyard as a connecting element
A landscaped inner courtyard lies between the building blocks, serving as a shared open space for the quarter. Beneath the complex, the interconnected underground car park links the three building sections and provides shared access. The inner courtyard and underground car park thus form central connecting elements between the residential, office and commercial areas.
Natural stone meets a light-coloured rendered façade
The façade design also reflects the complex’s diverse uses. The ground floors have been clad in natural stone, whilst a light-coloured thermal insulation render has been used on the storeys above. This ensures that the commercial buildings’ base sections are visually distinct from the residential and office spaces above.
Living and working in one location
The WHA Ruhrquartier brings together flats, workplaces, medical practices, retail outlets and restaurants within a single complex of buildings. The landscaped inner courtyard complements these uses by providing a communal open space and creates a central area between the three building blocks.
