Pile foundations and the preservation of historic buildings

Construction of the new south wing on the site of the historic building

For the construction of the new south wing, existing structural remains of the original building had to be integrated into the building project. These included historic foundation remains as well as a vaulted cellar from the south wing, which had long since been destroyed. The existing structural remains were secured and incorporated into the overall design of the new building.

Pile foundations in the area of historic foundations

Pile foundations were installed for the new building. A distinctive feature of the design was the structural decoupling in the area of the existing old foundations. This allowed the loads from the new building to be transferred to the subsoil separately from the historic existing structures.

186 titanium piles for the foundations

A total of 186 Ischebeck Titan 73/53 piles were used for the deep foundations. The piles form the basis for load transfer from the new building and were installed whilst taking the existing historic building remains into account.

Stabilisation and restoration of the existing masonry

In addition to the foundation works, the existing ruined masonry as well as the historic vaulted cellar were restored. Cleaning was carried out using a dry fine-sand method. The masonry surfaces were then treated with new sprayed mortar joints.

Historic vaulted cellar preserved

The existing vaulted cellar was preserved during the construction works. The stabilisation and restoration measures were designed to ensure the existing structure remains permanently accessible and to integrate it into the new south wing.

Foundation for the construction of the south wing

The installation of the pile foundations, as well as the stabilisation and restoration of the historic existing structures, laid the groundwork for the construction of the new south wing of Wittenberg Castle. The works combined foundation works with the preservation of existing historic building remains.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
