PORR constructing facilities for modern nursing care beside the Outer Alster Lake, Hamburg

Building Construction North Region was appointed general contractor for the conversion of the UHLENHORST nursing care facility and decided the dates for the start of execution planning and the shell construction work in record time. Construction began in March 2022.

Campaign of investment in modern care provision

The UHLENHORST nursing care facility comprises the Schwanenwik, Alster and Bellevue buildings, is near the Outer Alster Lake. It was built around 20 years ago, so it doesn’t yet require major renovation. However, the operator of the facility PFLEGEN & WOHNEN HAMBURG GmbH, has embarked on a campaign of investment for its Future Care Initiative. It aims to adapt its provision to the changing needs of the aging in an initial group of five care facilities in Hamburg and the UHLENHORST site is being expanded and modernised as part of this endeavour. ‘Serviced living’ takes account of people’s desire to live independently in their own accessible apartment for as long as possible. As general contractor, PORR is also general contractor for a second project in the ‘Future Care Initiative’: the new Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg care centre.

Extension with roof garden for people with dementia

Building 1, ‘Schwanenwik’, is the starting point for the renovation of the inpatient care area at UHLENHORST. There are a few double rooms, but the majority are single rooms. The north and east façades will be removed, the building enlarged to the north and, with the exception of the administration wing, a fifth floor will be added. The garden of the residential area for people with dementia will be relocated to the roof of the administration wing. As the connections for electricity, water, district heating, IT and telephone for the entire buildings is located in the basement, it is vital that these continue without interruption during the renovation work. After the residents have moved in, the Alster and Bellevue buildings will be renovated and repurposed as a Living/Living Plus service.
