In action for quieter road traffic

Right in the centre of Osnabrück, Johannisstraße has been presenting itself with a new and, above all, "quieter" road surface since summer 2022. For a long service life and a reduction of road noise for the environment, the former paved surface has given way to a concrete roadway. The Osnabrück branch was commissioned with the construction of the concrete roadway over a length of around 260 m.

Johannisstraße is located in the heart of Osnabrück. The newly constructed part of the street is designated as a pedestrian zone, but buses and bicycles are allowed to use it. Due to the improvement of the surfaces as well as the generous and modern design of the side areas with a shopping street character, Johannisstraße has become more attractive. The robust concrete construction method was chosen for the frequented areas, as the traffic load, especially from buses, is very high.

Special procedure to reduce noise emissions

The work in Osnabrück's busy shopping street had to take place under cramped conditions and was subject to a tightly timed construction schedule. A total of approx. 1,700 m² of concrete surface was produced.

After completion of the concrete paving, grinding work was carried out to create a surface texture in the finished concrete slab. This both meets increased evenness requirements and minimises driving noise from subsequent traffic on the roadway. This process is exceptional for urban roadway construction.

All challenges were mastered safely: The half-sided manual paving was carried out with the levelling roller (Striker roller) due to a roof slope, as well as the edging of the construction site on both sides by gutters and bus kerbs. Various widening areas and manholes in the carriageway also made paving difficult. Adjacent paved areas and lighting poles were specially protected from damage and soiling during paving.

Professional support from within the company

In the project, the shoulder-to-shoulder principle was put into practice: in-house expertise enables smooth work hand in hand. The independent building materials laboratory carried out the in-house monitoring for quality assurance. The technical office department drew up the joint plan. Within four weeks, the concrete carriageway was realised economically and safely.
