Strong teamwork during rehabilitation of the main runway
The Münster/Dortmund branch was commissioned by Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH in a joint venture with the rehabilitation of the Airfields during ongoing operations at Cologne/Bonn Airport. The entire expertise and effectiveness of the branches was required: On a total of 23 weekends from 12 noon on Saturday to 6 p.m. on Sunday, the runway was milled in sections to lay a total of 12,200 metres of empty conduits and repair 10,000 m² of cracks. On Sunday morning, the surfaces were all sealed again so that air traffic was not obstructed.
Logistical masterpiece
The main work consisted of the rehabilitation of 230,000 m² of binder course and surface course in the runway area. Four pavers, four feeders and 12 rollers were needed to pave the binder course, while six feeders, eight pavers as well as up to 32 rollers were required to pave the seamless surface course. In addition, up to 150 lorries were in operation on these major work weekends, transporting the mix from up to 6 asphalt mixing plants through safety gates to the construction site.
A logistical masterpiece for the entire team, which required shoulder to shoulder and precise coordination.
Modernisation of the technology
As the client wanted to modernise the technology to meet the requirements of the European aviation authorities, 63 new cable shafts and 21 new foundations for the runway signage were constructed. As part of the official requirements 442, existing shafts in the green areas were also provided with ramps. In this context, the runway lighting was also brought up to date, so that 2,864 new lights illuminate the runway and taxiways.
Everything from a single source
Thanks to the active support of the Düren, Berlin, Eisenhüttenstadt and Osnabrück branches as well as PORR, the ongoing consultation of the in-house laboratory and the strong performance of our subsidiary company CMG Baulogistik, this impressive project was successfully completed on a just-in-time basis.
