The perfect home base for sightseeing in the royal capital

The Berlin branch of PORR Building construction region east was commissioned by UBM Development Germany and a family office to construct a building complex with around 14,450 m2 of gross floor space (above ground) in the immediate vicinity of Potsdam's historic city centre. All the services for the project were provided from a single source: PORR affiliate pde Integrale Planung was responsible for the fire protection planning and PORR Spezialtiefbau, was involved in producing the construction pits in the run-up to the project. The new building was handed over on schedule and in compliance with all the requisite quality standards in November 2021 following a two-year construction period.

The centerpiece is a Holiday Inn Express & Suites hotel with 198 rooms

The newly built Holiday Inn Express hotel with 173 rooms is situated on the corner of Am Kanal and Französische Strasse and extends over six upper floors, including a technical floor in the mansard roof. The hotel also features a spacious lounge lobby, a hotel bar, and 25 suites,

which are equipped with a kitchenette and refrigerator for extended stays. A premium full-range retailer has moved into the 1,200m2 ground floor, and 65 parking spaces are available in the underground car park. The hotel is adjoined by a residential building with 126 micro-apartments along Französische Strasse. The second building is set apart from the hotel by its different facade design, which features French balconies and a number of grooved surfaces.

New building blends harmoniously into the historic cityscape

The building complex closes a gap that has existed for many years between the listed central post office – built in the typical neo-baroque style of the Wilhelminian era – and Französische Strasse. The final facade design and the choice of colour for the natural stone cladding were developed in close cooperation with the Potsdam Design Council and the heritage conservation authorities. This resulted in a deliberately restrained design for the facade, allowing the central post office take centre stage.
