"Concrete cancer" required road renewal on the A12
The concrete pavements on the A12 in the area of the Frankfurt (Oder)-Mitte junction up to the Oder bridge, which had been damaged by so-called concrete cancer, required fundamental road renewal on both directional carriageways. The Berlin and Eisenhüttenstadt branches were commissioned to carry out the rehabilitation, which involved true teamwork. From dismantling and soil improvement measures to the construction of the new carriageways, they worked hand in hand.
The concrete pavement of the A12 built after German reunification has been damaged in the area of the Frankfurt (Oder)-Mitte junction up to the Oder bridge by an alkali-silica reaction (ASR), colloquially known as concrete cancer. ASR represents a chemical reaction between alkalis of the cement stone in the concrete and the aggregate with alkali-soluble silicic acid. The result: severe damage to concrete structures such as motorway pavements. Dismantling and new construction is urgent when concrete cancer occurs required. Over a length of approx. 2.8 km, the existing pavement was removed in its entire width down to the existing subgrade.
Soil improvements and consolidation were carried out in sections. In addition to the sewer construction work, the necessary subgrade drainage was also constructed in order to then rebuild the roadway in asphalt construction with a thickness of 32 cm on a gravel base layer. After dismantling, the right-hand carriageway in the direction of Poland was rebuilt down to the existing unbound base course in concrete construction with a 30.5 cm thick exposed aggregate concrete pavement. Known as experts in concrete carriageway construction, the colleagues from the Osnabrück/Gütersloh branch carried out this work and complete the team in transport route engineering.
Ambitious schedule as the primary customer requirement
Keeping to the schedule, taking into account the extensive construction volume, was a top priority for the client. In November 2022, both directional lanes were made fully available again - so that traffic would be rolling smoothly once more.
