Superstructure of the first pylon of the Horb high bridge completed

Horb, 8 April 2025 – The PORR engineering team has reached another milestone in the construction of the Horb Viaduct. Within 2.5 months, the 46-metre-long haunched continuous beam for the superstructure of the first, southern pylon was encased, reinforced and successfully concreted 65 metres above the Neckar.

The Horb viaduct will be 667 metres long.

More than 600 cubic metres of concrete processed at lofty heights

The complex construction of formwork and scaffolding was designed to withstand the high concrete pressures. This made it possible to process more than 600 cubic metres of concrete at lofty heights without any problems. The next step is to create the connection point in this area, which will allow the first of the three V-shaped pylons to grow further upwards. From the highest point, five steel cables will be tensioned on each side for the horizontal load transfer of the more than 150-metre-long bridge segments.

Optimisation of the construction process has top priority

At the same time, the construction of the northern sections, in particular the ‘Am Rauschbart’ abutment, is in full swing. As a partner of PORR structural engineering, PORR special civil engineering was responsible for the foundations of the structure and supporting framework. This was mainly carried out using large-diameter bored piles with a diameter of 1.50 metres and a length of up to 40 metres and was completed at the end of February 2025.

‘We are currently working on a number of measures to further optimise the construction process,’ explains project manager Markus Jahn, adding: ’For example, in autumn 2025, we will use a 700-tonne crawler crane to place the approximately 60-metre-long and up to 14-centimetre-thick heavy plates, which will be used to reinforce the webs between the haunches, on the supporting structures.’
