U5 Europaviertel: Start of civil engineering work above ground

Work on the U5 Europaviertel project in Frankfurt a. M. is not only progressing underground - work is also continuing above ground: PORR civil engineering has taken over the direction on the construction site in Europa-Allee. Since the beginning of 2022, the final so-called trough structure - a U-shaped structure consisting of lateral retaining walls and a base - has been built here for the ramp via which the light rail will later reach the surface. At the same time, work has begun on the cut-and-cover tunnel section.

In the coming months, the base of the ramp and the adjacent tunnel will be constructed in the excavation pit between Lissaboner Strasse and Warschauer Strasse from west to east using the cut-and-cover method. Formwork and reinforcing steel are being installed block by block, after which the base will be concreted in sections. Concreting is expected to continue until summer 2022. The tunnel section will then be constructed using the cut-and-cover method in the excavation pit between Dubliner Strasse and Warschauer Strasse. This will involve the construction, also in sections, of a rectangular frame structure consisting of the invert, side walls and tunnel roof. The frame structure connects to the already constructed tunnel tubes and thus links the tunnel in closed construction with the tunnel in open construction.

At the end of the work, the cut-and-cover tunnel will be backfilled to the ground surface. In total, the excavation pit in Europa-Allee for the ramp and the cut-and-cover tunnel section is a good 400 meters long and between 8.50 and 17 meters wide.
