U5 extension into Europaviertel: Emergency exit complete

Düsseldorfer Strasse in Frankfurt am Main has been closed to outbound traffic between Karlstrasse and Mainzer Landstrasse for 648 days due to the construction of an emergency exit at Platz der Republik as part of the extension of the U5 underground line into Europaviertel: There must be an emergency exit every 600 metres so that, in emergencies, the maximum distance to a tunnel exit is 300 metres. The fire brigade can also access the tunnel via an emergency exit in the event of fire. The structural work is now complete. This marks the completion of another milestone in the Stadtbahn Europaviertel project.

When it came to constructing the emergency exit at a depth of 8 metres, the PORR structural engineering team, which was involved in the construction of the emergency exit as part of the U5 Europaviertel consortium, faced some technical challenges. “Connecting the existing 1970s structure with the new one whilst ensuring effective protection from groundwater and water penetration was a real challenge”, says Nicol Bojda, construction supervisor at PORR Deutschland.

Access to the emergency exit is provided by a hydraulic floor hatch which can be opened by key from the outside and a button from the inside, in all weather conditions, with no need for a power connection.

We congratulate the on-site team on completing this sub-project!
