Munich, 20.05.2021 – May is ‘Bee Month’: As the month that marks the shift from spring to summer, May offers a paradise of flowers that invites bees to pollinate them, harvest their nectar and turn it into honey. In doing so, these industrious little creatures make an immensely important contribution to our ecosystem. Unfortunately, they are under threat around the world, mainly due to external environmental factors. Since 2017, the PORR Group has been working to counter this threat through its bee@PORR sustainability initiative. The company is committed to preventing bee death, following the motto “Bee aware and care”. PORR offers a home for bee colonies at over 40 locations internationally, six of which are in Germany. As part of this initiative, PORR has already installed 435 hives, providing homes for around 20 million bees.

For years now, bee populations have been falling drastically around the world. The reasons for this drop include the use of pesticides and a loss of plant diversity. The threat to bees also places our entire ecosystem in jeopardy.

Sustainable habitats with bee@PORR

PORR founded the bee@PORR initiative in response to widespread bee death. The company builds homes for bee colonies and provides suitable spaces for beekeepers. Boxes, as beekeepers refer to the structures built to house bee colonies, have been installed at over 40 locations in all PORR home markets, either on the ground or on roofs. In Germany, beehives have been set up in Herzfelde (Berlin), Colbitz (Saxony Anhalt), Aschheim and Plattling (both Bavaria), Wellen (Rhineland Palatinate) and Düsseldorf (North Rhine-Westphalia).

However, saving bees is not the initiative’s only focus, as PORR is also committed to ongoing training and development for beekeepers. It is investing in young beekeepers from outside the company as well as its own employees, a number of whom are also professional and hobbyist beekeepers. The central idea behind this initiative is that PORR should build sustainably for generations, in every respect – out of conviction and social responsibility.

A small PORRtion of honey

Two-thirds of the honey produced is handed over to the beekeepers, with the rest going to the company. Each PORRtion of honey is stored in special PORR-branded jars and given out as a sweet treat on special occasions.
