Award-winning companies were selected by FOCUS/For Our Planet, research partner FactField, Klimaschutz-Unternehmen e.V. and Prof Stefan Schaltegger from the Centre for Sustainable Management (CSM) at Leuphana University Lüneburg. Companies were assessed on the status of their past and present climate protection commitments as well as on defined targets and plans for the future. In order to determine the list of top companies, 42,000 German-based enterprises were asked to complete an extensive online questionnaire and to provide information on their previous climate commitment and its sincerity, market impact and the contribution of climate-friendly products and climate targets. In addition to the online survey, a range of public sources was analysed as part of a multi-stage process of quality assurance. A group of experts also conducted scientifically supported research by collecting information on the status of companies’ climate commitments and determining the main climatic effects of their products and services.
A total of 130 German companies received an award for their “top climate commitment” on this basis. Next, 88 companies received the “Top Climate Commitment” award, and 42 companies received the ‘Top Climate Commitment in Recent Times” award, including PORR, which is the only company in the construction industry to be so honoured. The study was published on 6 November.
