Latest on the U5 Europaviertel construction site in Frankfurt/Main

Things are progressing: After conventional tunnel boring in the south tube started in September 2021 and the preparatory measures for the remaining boring in the north tube, specialist civil engineering works have continued on Boulevard Ost. PORR subsidiary Stump-Franki Spezialtiefbau GmbH took on the boring work for the dewatering measures, the soldier pile wall of the future ramp structure and the tunnel using the cut-and-cover method.

In total, 18 dewatering wells with a diameter of 880mm were drilled with a rotary drill to lower and monitor the groundwater. For future groundwater relief within the construction pit, an additional 92 relief lances with a diameter of 152mm were produced using the double-head method with anchor drilling equipment. The drilling depths were between 8m and 30m in each case.

Specialist civil engineering at greater depths in Frankfurt’s urban area continues to come up against new challenges: the Frankfurt clay, with its limestone benches, means additional complications and increased wear and tear. Due to the cramped conditions in the city centre, the construction site logistics and coordination of the individual teams also created difficulties for employees during tunnel boring.

All partners working shoulder to shoulder ensures that such challenges are overcome with ease.
