"With the blessing, the patron saint is asked for her protection against accidents every year on 4 December - from the tunnel stop to the tunnel breakthrough. Working underground everyday involves challenging and risky situations in which competence, concentration and comradeship are indispensable. The tunnel builders rely on the protection of their patron saint," explains Dr. Thorsten Weiner, Technical Division Manager Tunnel Construction Germany at PORR.
On the occasion of St. Barbara's Day, Ingo Kühn, technical managing director of SBEV, thanked the tunnellers for their work over the past year: "With the successful completion of mechanical tunnelling for the second tunnel tube, we have reached an important intermediate milestone in the "Stadtbahn Europaviertel" project - also thanks to the hard work of the miners. The tunnel was driven without subsidence and we have shown that mechanised tunnelling is possible in Frankfurt. For the conventional, mined tunnel construction, Saint Barbara is once again standing by us protectively and we are confident that we will also complete this successfully."
