Divers monitor underwater concreting for the SuedLink project

Work on the Elbe crossing of the SuedLink, ElbX, is progressing under challenging conditions: the underwater concrete base has been installed in a 25-metre-deep construction pit. This step is a central milestone on the way to tunnelling under the Elbe. Since the start and finish shafts are in groundwater, the construction pits for the shafts must be waterproof and stable.

The work is being carried out by an experienced diving subcontractor. ‘We are working together with the divers on the concreting of the underwater concrete base plate, which was already placed in the construction pit after the excavation,’ explains Damian Pikos, team leader of heavy special civil engineering.
Maximum precision is particularly important for underwater concreting. The divers thoroughly check the position of the plates in advance, as well as the cleanliness of the foundations under the concrete base. These checks are essential to ensure quality and safety.
Working at a depth of 25 metres is an extraordinary challenge even for experienced divers. However, special safety precautions ensure that the tasks can be carried out efficiently and safely. Once the concreting work is complete, the next construction phase will begin: the actual tunnelling under the Elbe.
Our video, which documents the progress of the project, provides insights into the impressive work of the divers and the complex processes involved.
