The study trip was organised by the company Assmann Beraten + Planen GmbH. On site at the U5 construction site, the female students were given valuable insights into the construction progress and technical challenges of a major project in an urban area by PORR project manager Joachim Loos.
A project that creates connections
The extension of the Frankfurt U5 light rail line into the Europaviertel district includes a 1,160-metre underground section, as well as the shell of the new Güterplatz station. PORR Structural Engineering, which was awarded the construction contract in 2017, is working at full speed to complete the project's only underground light rail station. A significant milestone was reached in November 2024: the final concreting of the last section of the two-metre-thick structural base with a volume of 738 cubic metres. A total of 2,325 tonnes of reinforcement and around 9,000 cubic metres of concrete were used for the base. From the end of January 2025, the PORR Engineering team will begin constructing the outer walls, which will be up to 1.5 metres thick up to the second layer of stiffeners.
Once completed, the major project will make an important contribution to urban mobility in Frankfurt. For the Ukrainian students, the site visit provided a fascinating insight into the complex processes involved in modern construction projects and at the same time strengthened international networking in the construction industry.
