Frankfurt am Main, 19 January 2017 – The agreement to build the underground section of the U5 city line from Platz der Republik in Europaviertel was signed yesterday by SBEV – Stadtbahn Europaviertel Projektbaugesellschaft mbH and PORR Deutschland GmbH. The tender volume is over EUR 120m.

“This highly challenging tender is a milestone in the development of civil engineering for PORR in Germany”, said Karl-Heinz Strauss, CEO of PORR AG. “Just like the Group as a whole, PORR Deutschland employs a strategy of intelligent growth. Among the tenders we have recently acquired this project is a genuine highlight”.

A new urban quarter for Frankfurt
With Europaviertel in Frankfurt a new inner city quarter is being born, one in which around 30,000 people will live and work. The high quality of life comes from the generous urban development standards, modern infrastructure and optimal transport and traffic links. The measures underway include extending the U5 city line by around 2.7km, along with four new stations. This additional section consists of multiple construction lots.

The tender awarded to PORR Deutschland in a consortium with Stump Spezialtiefbau GmbH involves the 1,160m-long underground section from Platz der Republik to where the section emerges overground by the Emser Bridge. The project also includes the construction of the shell of the underground station Güterplatz. Works are set to start in February 2017. The two tunnel tubes will be driven with the earth-pressure-balance method over a period of around 16 months, complemented by various additional measures. The majority of the project will be determined by specialist civil engineering and structural engineering. The works are due for completion by July 2022.

“The project is an ideal fit for the core competencies of PORR, which is operating here with PORR Deutschland GmbH in a consortium with the subsidiary Stump Spezialtiefbau GmbH and will execute the key works – structural engineering, specialist civil engineering and TBM-Tunnel – with its own operating units”, added Stephan Hebgen, Managing Director of PORR Deutschland GmbH.
