Excavation pit with bored pile wall and DSV sealing base
DSV sealing bases were constructed as preliminary protection and sealing against the groundwater. The 45 m2 excavation pit is enclosed with a bored pile wall and secured with 11 micropiles up to 20 m long. In the smaller, 20 m2 excavation pit, nailed shotcrete walls absorb the occurring earth forces. A total of 29 bored piles with a diameter of 1,200 mm up to a drilling depth of 15 m and two bored piles with a diameter of 620 mm up to a drilling depth of 7 m were installed. Bored piles and micropiles have the advantage of absorbing high tensile and compressive loads due to their dimensions. Since enormous masses act on the subsoil in fully filled sugar silos, the use of the piles offers a high level of safety for the Südzucker plant. A dewatering system was installed within the excavation pit.
Plant enables sugar to be loaded from silo onto lorry
Südzucker AG is the world's largest beet sugar producer and operates seven sugar factories in traditional beet growing areas in Germany alone. The factory in Rain am Lech, Bavaria, was built in 1957 and processes up to 1.6 million tonnes of beet per year, producing up to 250,000 tonnes of sugar. A large part of the production volume is delivered directly to the industry by special silo and tank trucks. For direct loading of the trucks from the sugar silos, Südzucker is building a modern facility for hygienic and dust-free bulk sugar loading at the Rain factory.
Completion date met while production continues
More than 100,000 tonnes of sugar can be stored in the seven large silos on the Rain factory premises. To withstand these loads, the massive excavation pit shoring for the smaller of the two excavation pits had to be completed before the peak phase of the 2022 beet campaign began and the neighbouring silos were successively filled. Of course, an interruption or even a production stop was out of the question. Since the existing foundation was thicker than originally assumed, the time window became extremely tight. Due to the advance planning and interlocked cooperation with the other trades and the transparent, regular exchange of information with the client, the promised deadline was met. The anchoring of the bored pile wall was also a real challenge in the tight space conditions, which the team mastered with bravura.
