In September 2015 the civil engineering department of the Berlin branch of Porr Deutschland GmbH received the contract from Münchner Grund Immobilienträger GmbH to build a new Holiday Inn Express Berlin Alexanderplatz at Klosterstrasse 48, corner Stralauer Strasse, in central Berlin. The hotel is being built in one of the oldest quarters of Berlin opposite the Stadthaus (Old City Hall), the Rotes Rathaus (Red City Hall), the Dutch Embassy and the Spree river, and not far from the last remains of the Berlin city wall.
As the general contractor, Porr Deutschland GmbH will erect this hotel with a total floor space of 7,070 m² in 14 months. A total of 186 hotel rooms will be built on the upper floors. The ground floor will house the reception, a patio, a bar and a gastronomy area. The basement will have 13 parking spaces for cars and be used for deliveries.
Porr Deutschland GmbH plans to start construction work in February 2016 when the construction pit is handed over. The project is planned for completion by the end of March 2017. The building will be erected as a turnkey project apart from the building of the construction pit incl. special underground work and the furnishings.
The rectangular plot, 1,117 sq m in size, will be completely built over. The upper seven storeys with the hotel rooms will stretch in an L-shape along the roads, with air space to the buildings at the rear. An arcade passage will be built on the ground floor along the Stralauer Strasse to make the building fit into the streetscape. The tunnel for the underground and protective structures are in the direct vicinity of the HIEX.
The tunnel runs along the plot boundary. This presents a special challenge to the site team in terms of the complex logistics. The hotel building will close another unsightly space between buildings in Berlin, taking account of the aspects of historic architecture and the conditions laid down by the Denkmalamt (office for the protection of historic monuments).
