Complex construction work with a focus on sustainability
Work on the construction of the new rail transhipment facility at the EUROGATE Container Terminal in Bremerhaven is progressing according to plan. Originally divided into eleven construction phases, the project was reduced to six by combining individual sections. A total of 38,000 m² of asphalt surfaces, including the underlying base layers and drainage systems, have already been removed and the connection of new drainage and supply systems has been installed. Finally, the PORR traffic construction team focused on the largest construction section, with an area of around 25,000 m². Here, asphalt with a reduced temperature and viscosity, modified with polymer-modified bitumen, was used. The layer structure includes a 13 cm thick asphalt base layer (AC 32 TS) as well as a 6 cm thick asphalt surface layer (AC 16 DS).
With this material, particular emphasis is placed on sustainability: production and installation reduce energy consumption and minimise the development of harmful vapours and aerosols. This helps to reduce environmental pollution and sends a clear signal about the long-term responsibility of the project. The asphalt works in construction section 5, with an area of around 4,500 m², as well as the renewal of a smaller construction section of around 1,500 m², are still outstanding.
The construction site requires precise coordination
The construction site in the harbour area is a free zone under customs law, which requires special import regulations and controls. Numerous companies and trades are working closely together on the 8-hectare site. Exact coordination with parallel work, such as track construction, crane construction or adjacent traffic and building construction projects, is essential to avoid delays. Above all, however, the regular operation of the port must be taken into account.
The PORR central laboratory in Münster is overseeing the entire asphalt paving process to ensure the required quality. It also supports the self-monitoring of the earthworks and the construction of the gravel base layer. Thanks to the close cooperation within PORR, the Osnabrück branch was able to rely on the support of an asphalt crew from another branch when deadlines overlapped.
Signalling the future
The new rail transhipment facility is scheduled to open in summer 2025. This project is more than just a technical milestone – it is a symbol of Bremerhaven's determination to continue playing a central role in international trade in the future. With the significant increase in transhipment capacity and the consistent implementation of sustainable construction methods, Bremerhaven is strengthening its position as an important hub in European container traffic and remains well equipped to meet the growing demands of international trade.
