Innovative and efficient: digital carriageway rehabilitation on the A3 sets new standards

On the A3 motorway between the Hünxe and Emmerich junctions, a road rehabilitation project is currently underway that is impressive not only for its scope, but also for its innovative and digital construction method. On behalf of Autobahn GmbH, PORR Verkehrswegebau, its subsidiary G-S Straßenbau, Bunte and Eurovia are carrying out the extensive work as a consortium. The renovation is being carried out over a total length of 39 kilometres in five construction phases. The work will be carried out under full road closure and is expected to be completed in autumn 2024.

The special features of this construction site are manifold. In addition to the construction method using compact asphalt and the supporting use of digital aids such as Smart Site One (SSO), area-wide compaction control (FDVK) and thermoscans, the logistical challenge is particularly noteworthy. Not only did a total of 93,000 tonnes of milled material have to be removed, but the same amount of mix also had to be delivered. This demanding project requires perfect coordination of mixing plants and haulage companies.

Logistical challenges and efficient coordination
The use of compact asphalt enables two asphalt layers to be laid at the same time. This construction method shortens the runtime and reduces overall costs. The software tools used, such as SSO, FDVK and Thermoscans, support the planning, execution and documentation of the construction site. The use of these tools offers considerable benefits: they enable asphalt planning before the start of construction using SSO, improve logistics and monitor the flow of materials during paving. In addition, FDVK and thermoscans ensure precise control and documentation of the paving quality. For the client, this means deadline and quality reliability at all levels.

Time management and personnel: key components for rehabilitation
Despite the technological advances that make the work easier, the experienced team from Münster faces a number of challenges: Above all, the tight time window is a mandatory requirement to keep the full motorway closure as short as possible. The logistical challenge of transport capacities for the milled material and the mix is managed with several mixing plants and haulage companies. Another decisive factor is personnel management, which requires a large number of employees and consortium partners working in multiple shifts. Despite all the challenges, the customer's central requirement remains clear: a large stretch of motorway is to be built to the highest quality in a short space of time.
