It is a major project designed to meet the changing demands on mobility: With the new construction of the Marzahn traffic junction, the Berlin Senate Administration is responding to the need to expand the transportation infrastructure. The main reasons for the need for action are the dilapidated condition of the existing bridge structures, the outdated traffic facilities and the lack of safe cycle paths and footpaths. “With this project, the state of Berlin is actively tackling the ageing infrastructure. The new transportation hub implements urgently needed measures to improve the transportation infrastructure,” explains Meik Müller, Managing Director of PORR GmbH & Co. KGaA. The implementation is intended to increase traffic safety, expand the infrastructure and improve connections to the industrial estate to the west.
Broad range of services for comprehensive modernization
Implementation planning began in January 2025 so that the PORR Civil Engineering team can start the first construction activities in April 2025. The construction project includes numerous sophisticated components that will enable a fundamental modernization of the transport infrastructure. The focus is on two new bridge structures, one of which is being built as a steel composite structure and the other as a reinforced concrete structure. One of the bridges runs over the existing railroad facilities. In addition, 13 retaining walls and four underpasses are being built to optimize traffic routing.
Further work includes the demolition of an existing bridge, extensive earthworks with a volume of around 55,400 m³ of soil as well as the installation of 1,877 m² of steel sheet piling and 3,030 tons of reinforcing steel. In addition, 374 tons of steel structures, including steel composite girders, will be installed.
The range of services extends from planning and demolition to reinforced concrete construction, waterproofing and railing construction. Completion of the project will result in a significant improvement to the transport infrastructure that meets both mobility and sustainability requirements.
Successful collaboration and optimized construction processes
PORR once again impressed the client with its holistic “everything from a single source” approach. “We have already successfully implemented projects for the Senate Administration in the past. The focus has always been on working together as partners. Our openness and willingness to optimize construction processes to ensure efficient implementation of the project were particularly impressive,” says Müller.
This major project represents another important step towards improving the transport infrastructure in Berlin. It addresses the growing demands for mobility, climate protection and sustainability. Completion of the new building is planned for the end of 2028 and will sustainably improve the quality of life in Marzahn and the surrounding regions.
