Highland games: PORR Building Construction Region East enjoys Scottish tradition

From 1 to 2 September 2022, an adventurous team event awaited the employees of PORR Building Construction Region East from the Dresden, Schmölln and Berlin locations. They visited Fleesensee Palace in the Mecklenburg Lake District, where a surprise awaited the PORRians as they travelled back in time to the Highland games, once hosted by the Gaelic chieftains.

The Highland Games are a series of traditional events including sporting competitions. They were originally part of the gatherings of Scottish clans in the Scottish Highlands intended to find the fastest, boldest and strongest men in Scotland. PORR Building Construction Region East adopted the format and turned it into an entertaining team-building event: The contestants were divided into small groups – or “clans”– before facing various fun and challenging tactical, skill-based and sporting competitions requiring team spirit and commitment.

Before the games started, each clan designed its own coat of arms. PORR was the focus of each design. The different clans did battle shoulder-to-shoulder in sporting activities such as welly tossing, nail hammering, log carrying and beer mug lifting.  The unusual competition was greeted with great enthusiasm. To get the full Scottish experience, all PORRians wore their own self-crafted kilts. The Highland Games ended with the award ceremony, good food, great music, dance and a pleasant get-together.

The next day, after a hearty breakfast, participants started their journey home and returned from their Scottish break to their everyday lives. They took with them the team spirit and fantastic experiences they created together. Who knows – maybe we’ll see a return of the Highland Games at one of the other PORR locations...?
