Airports: hubs of globalisation and the German economy

Munich, 13 February 2025 - In a globalised world, airports are not only central hubs for international travel, but also important business locations. They promote international trade and tourism and are indispensable components of the transport infrastructure. In 2022, German airports recorded around 200 million passengers and a freight volume of around 4.5 million tonnes. German air traffic increased by 7 % in 2024 compared to the previous year, underlining the increasing importance of these hubs.

Airports are not only crucial for the mobility of people, but also for economic recovery. Frankfurt Airport, the largest in Germany, directly and indirectly employs over 80,000 people and generates an economic added value of around 22 billion euros annually. These figures illustrate the immense economic importance of airport infrastructure.

Potential for the construction industry

The German construction industry has great business potential in the area of airport infrastructure. One example is the maintenance of aviation surfaces. In view of the rising passenger numbers and increasing freight traffic, well-maintained runways, taxiways and apron areas are crucial for the smooth operation of an airport. Specialist expertise and technology are needed to maintain these surfaces in order to meet the high safety standards and strict regulations of the aviation authorities. Modern construction materials and innovative techniques can help to extend the lifespan of the infrastructure and reduce operating costs. Using high-performance concrete and advanced asphalt mixtures, for example, increases resistance to loads and weathering.

One company that has excelled in this field is PORR Verkehrswegebau in Germany. With decades of experience and comprehensive expertise, the company is contributing to the modernisation of airport infrastructure in Germany. Its role as a reliable partner is particularly evident in major projects.

Night-time renovation at Frankfurt Airport

An outstanding example of demanding renovation work on heavily used air traffic areas is demonstrated by PORR transport route engineering at Frankfurt am Main Airport. Within just four months, a section of taxiway M, as well as taxiways L5 and M8, were renovated. The work included milling off the damaged surface and installing a new surface using the ‘concrete on asphalt’ hybrid construction method. It was particularly challenging to carry out the work exclusively during night shifts so as not to disrupt flight operations. Thanks to precise operational planning and effective construction logistics, the rehabilitation was completed on schedule.

Apron areas and taxiways at Düsseldorf Airport

Another important project is the rehabilitation of apron areas at Düsseldorf Airport. Since March 2024, 7,300 m² of concrete surfaces and a 550 m² parking area have been renewed there. From mid-2024, 23,750 m² of the P4 taxiway will be renewed. Old drainage systems and cable trays will also be replaced. The work is scheduled for completion in April 2025. In order to ensure that the deadline is met, the work requires meticulous planning of shift operations and round-the-clock logistics in coordination with ongoing flight operations.

In this project, the company is also placing a strong focus on sustainability and innovation in the construction industry by using environmentally friendly materials and energy-efficient technologies. At Düsseldorf Airport, a large proportion of the demolition material will be recycled in line with the circular economy. This underlines PORR's ‘Green and Lean’ strategy, which combines ecological and efficient solutions in the construction industry.

Overall, it is clear that PORR, with its comprehensive range of services from a single source, not only has the necessary expertise and experience, but also the ability to adapt to the ever-changing demands of airport construction. This makes the company a proven partner for the future of Germany's airport infrastructure.
