Concreting of the carriageway slab and in situ concrete addition on the Salzbachtalbrücke north completed

The construction of the two-part Salzbachtal bridge is part of the A66 Rhein-Main motorway and thus an important infrastructure project for the region around Wiesbaden. A few months before the planned handover to Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, the concrete road surface is complete and the remaining work is running like clockwork. The last major milestones are the construction of the bridge caps and, after the sealing work has been completed, the construction of the road surface using mastic asphalt.

The bridge construction is nearing completion.

Before that, various works will be carried out to ensure traffic safety as well as the longevity of the new bridge. Immediately after concreting the carriageway slab, the gradient compensation will be calculated. This serves to compensate for unevenness in the road surface, in order to ensure a smooth, safe transition between the bridge and the adjacent road sections. Subsequently, the expansion joints will be installed. These roadway elements compensate for the bridge movements and ensure load transfer. After shot-blasting the concrete surface, the bridge structure will be sealed against water penetration. In addition, technical systems such as railings, ice warning systems, telematics, power cables, as well as protective and guiding devices and, finally, marking work will be installed.

Effective occupational safety concept prioritises prevention

‘We are proud of the fact that we were able to complete important milestones such as laying the 164 precast concrete elements earlier than planned. Despite the prevailing weather conditions and the resulting delays, the eleven concreting sections were also completed on time. We are therefore confident that we will be able to hand over the North Bridge to the client as planned in summer 2025,’ explains PORR project manager Salam Khuzandar, adding: ’As we near completion, I would like to thank everyone involved: the client as well as our consortium partner for the consistently good cooperation, our suppliers for their reliability and, above all, our employees. Their commitment on the construction site and behind the scenes in the offices is what made this challenging project possible in the first place.’

In addition to the timely completion of the project, the comprehensive occupational safety concept was also a great success. Despite the high time pressure and up to 35 people working at lofty heights at the same time, the construction site has been accident-free for almost two years – thanks in no small part to the personal commitment of the construction site crew.
