Construction of Magdeburg's City Tunnel: "Last Wall" is Concreted

In Magdeburg, PORR is building a 340 m long road tunnel between Damaschkeplatz and Otto-v.-Guericke-Straße at the main railway station under the project name "Ernst-Reuter-Allee railway overpass". The construction project is one of the largest traffic projects in the city since reunification and is intended to optimise operations at the station and relieve the current traffic situation around the station. A decisive milestone in the project has now been reached: the "last wall" has been completed.

In June 2015, the groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction on one of the most extensive transport projects in Magdeburg: the "Ernst-Reuter-Allee railway overpass" construction project. In order to replace the dilapidated railway bridges, PORR Ingenieurbau was commissioned to build the new railway overpass at Magdeburg's main railway station. In future, a total of five railway bridges and two tunnels - constructed with a cover - will separate the car traffic, the tram line and the pedestrian flows. This will eliminate a previous bottleneck between Damaschkeplatz and the Otto-von-Guericke-Straße intersection. The so-called Magdeburger Citytunnel is scheduled for completion at the end of 2022.

About 34,500 m³ of concrete were used. Around 5,000 t of steel were used. About 48,000 m³ of earth excavated in the tunnel. 93 floor slabs produced. 243 walls, trough walls and retaining walls were built.

Now it's done: the "last wall" was concreted on 27 January.

PORR Germany is working shoulder to shoulder with colleagues from PORR Polska to complete the project by the end of 2022.
